About Peas

by Harriette Joffe

From four corners of our earth, four farmers planted peas. With prayers that asked for sun and rain, a caressing summer breeze.

As each seed slept beneath the earth, each in its own small bed. A gentle breeze began to whirl, spinning overhead.

The gentle wind became a storm, uncovering every seed. Lifting each into the sky with amazing speed.

Into space they spun and twirled away, very far from home. When suddenly they fell to places, all really quite unknown.

Each seed knowing when to pop, in this special place. From its wonderful tiny bed to show its lovely face.

Now the peas stretched above the earth curling in the sun. Vines grew pods here and there, each thinking, “This is fun!”

Inside each pod, the peas awoke exploring each other’s faces. Quite upset to realize, they were all from different races.

One pea was horrified, she soon began to scream. You are not at all like me! You are not even green!

Some of them hollered and some of them sighed. All of them wept. Oh, how they cried!

“Your eyes are red, yours are black and yours are bright yellow. “Get out of my pod! Get out right now! Get out, you improper fellow!

Then from a tendril down the vine came a whisper from within. “Consider this you silly peas…. You’re brothers and sisters under skin.
