#65 After the Turkey

The idea and ideal of Thanksgiving is always welcome. Good cheer and good thoughts abound. We are more patient, more tolerant and more considerate. Our grateful list comes out and we appreciate those we love. We are thankful without reservation and for a brief moment during the year we celebrate the life we created. Gathered around us are the people that make our lives worthwhile. The people we call family, whether of blood or spirit, confirm what we already know about our lives. There is a lot to be grateful for. There is a lot to be thankful for and for one day out of the year we feel justified and safe in expressing that.
The holidays come and the holidays go. We will get upset again and there will be a lot more opportunities to complain and kvetch about how life is hard, people don’t understand, and work is too much. The evidence of why we should be unhappy is overwhelming. We are constantly bombarded with how much anger and violence are in the world and sometimes the best we can do is be grateful that another day is on the way. Wouldn’t it be nice if we had our grateful list out to remind us otherwise?
In all honesty, being thankful is a true challenge. It seems that everywhere we look there are reasons to be ungrateful and miserable. Remember that every cloud has a silver lining. But not in a Pollyanna sort of way. In the way that expresses appreciation for both the difficult times and the easy times. The hard times teach us to reach inside and discover who we really are. They are the times that teach us what being grateful is really all about.
