Soap bubbles are among the most magical of things. They have the ability to conjure up pictures of childhood playdates and birthday parties. Caught in the sleeve of a whispering breeze, they float to destinations unknown, memories lost in our ancestral history. Seeming to defy all laws of gravity, the brilliance of the spectrum as seen by the sun is revealed in their iridescent shell. Bubbles give the viewer a chance to witness the possibilities of the impossible. Glass like in their appearance, made of the most fragile of substances, each will travel along the course best suited for its full expression. For a brief second of time, life is wondrous again. Bubbles are captivating and despite their temporary existence, the memory of them can be everlasting.
Just thinking of bubbles usually brings about a smile. Simplistic in their appearance, the complexity in which they are able to exist escapes casual observance. Regardless of its initial shape, they will consistently try to attain a spherical shape so that its surface area is reduced and its energy requirements are minimized (they are prime examples of the mathematical concept of minimal surface). Bubbles must travel along the path of least resistance. The delicate balance between the forces within the bubble and those on the outside of the bubble always work together so that the pressure on either side of its rainbow-like surface is equal. The familiar bubble shape can only be achieved if there is cooperation between all components on each side. When all the elements work together and equilibrium is maintained, the bubble takes flight and shines. If its stability is disrupted by unequal pressure or an unfavorable outside influence the bubble will burst. It will pop leaving nothing but a memory.
