#61 To Steward

To steward: The act of managing another’s property.

Dawn comes early, earlier it seems when it is cold outside. Rising before most people finish dreaming, the work needs to be done. There is a commitment and a promise that overshadows any minor activity such as sleep.

Imagine working on a project for months, years even, devoting all your money, all your time and all your energy to one goal. A goal, you know from the beginning, may fail from any number of unforeseen and unpredictable circumstances. Everything you own you invest into this goal. You work all day, nearly every single hour the sun is up and more. Weather determines more than just the type of clothing you wear; the weather has the power to completely and utterly destroy everything you have worked for. There is no stopping the weather. The weather does not stop for anyone. It cares little for your sacrifices and for your convenience. Knowing all of this you still keep going because you have a commitment to the land and a promise to the people who depend on you.

Perhaps, our last and greatest connection to the land and the planet we call home rests upon the people who devote their lives to the nurturing and cultivation of mother earth. Appointed by a call greater than themselves, they silently steward the fields and crops the rest of us rely on so heavily for food and existence. Given the mighty task of making sure that we have food to eat, and our families are taken of, they willingly sacrifice all they have so that we survive. Theirs is a life of commitment and promise. In service for the greater good, we owe our unending gratitude to the farmer.
