The Gift of Autumn
Did you feel the shift a few weeks ago? There was a coolness in the ground that was not there last month. Have you noticed the sun? It’s position in the sky has changed and is shines through the windows at a different angle than it did a month ago. Are you aware of the stillness? The busyness of summer began its return to quietness. What begins must end and the fanfare of summer must give way to a humble autumn. September gives us space to prepare for winter’s resting time. The yang energy that was so exemplified by picnics and cookouts is slowly returning to its yin counterpart. Autumn is the transition between yang and yin. Where life is less expansive and a bit more internal. It is the natural order of things. It is the way.
So, finish those projects you started in July. Attend the last shows with the tickets you purchased in March. And turn under the garden that so graciously supplied you with a king’s bounty of sustenance and contentment. Life must rest in order to give so fully of itself. This is the gift of winter, space to reflect and prepare for what is next. Autumn is nature’s way of giving us time to slow down so that when we finally stop, in the dark days of February, we are ready.
Take advantage of the growing darkness and the coolness that makes sleepy nights so enjoyable. Let the warm embrace of hearty soups and stews chase away the cold that finds its way into the crevices of our bones and sinews. Like soil that is well-tended and gently nourished, autumn declares the past complete and prepares us for the next spring. This is the gift of autumn.
